University of Texas - Stimulating Access to Research in Residency

The University of Texas Stimulating Access to Research in Residency (UT-StARR) program is a mentored research training program for Internal Medicine and Pediatrics residents. Funded through a National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) R38 grant, the program prepares residents for careers as physician-investigators conducting laboratory, translational, clinical, or population health research focused on heart, lung, and blood diseases across the lifespan.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet NIH eligibility requirements as U.S. citizens or permanent residents and must have matched to the Internal Medicine Residency Program or the Pediatrics Residency Program. Research training takes place between PGY-1 and PGY-2 or between PGY-2 and PGY-3. The program provides funding for one to two years of research.

Prior research experience is not required. Residents who are interested in research careers but have limited or no previous research experience are encouraged to apply. Applicants should demonstrate a clear interest in pursuing a career that includes research.

The program is designed to prepare participants for subspecialty fellowships that provide continued clinical and research training.

Relationship with other Residency Training Programs

UT-StARR compliments the Internal Medicine Physician Scientist Training Program (IM-PSTP) and the Physician Scientist Training Program in Pediatrics (PSTP2). Together, these programs help build a pipeline of physician investigators prepared to pursue research-focused fellowships and additional career development opportunities.
