Residency Informational Session

PGY2 Investigational Drugs and Research Informational Session will be hosted at various times from October to November with specific times located on the Investigational Drugs & Research Residency form.   • ASHP Midyear Residency Showcase Booth #4108 on Tuesday, December 7, 2026, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., ET

The PGY-2 Investigational Drugs and Research Pharmacy residency program at UTSW is a one-year post-graduate training program designed to provide an opportunity for the residents to develop strong clinical foundation, knowledge, leadership skills and experience to specialize in clinical research and investigational drug services.

Purpose

PGY-2 pharmacy residency program will provide residents with opportunities to function as independent practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete the program will be prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available.

Rotations

Residents will gain experience and training in the following clinical service areas:

  • Orientation (4 weeks)
  • Investigational Drug Service Pharmacy Leadership & Management (5 weeks)
  • Investigational Drug Service Oncology Pharmacy Operations I (4 weeks)
  • Investigational Drug Service Oncology Pharmacy Operations II (4 weeks)
  • Inpatient Investigational Drug Service (4-5 weeks)
  • Outpatient Oncology (Solid-Tumor): Direct Patient Care (4 weeks)
  • Medication Safety and Quality (5 weeks)
  • Clinical Research Office Oncology (4 weeks)
  • Phase 1 Clinical Trial – Oncology (4-5 weeks)

Elective Rotations

  • Clinical Study Pharmacology (3-4 weeks)
  • Informatics and Data Management (3-4 weeks)
  • Outpatient Oncology (Heme-Malignancy): Direct Patient Care (4 weeks)

Longitudinal Experiences

  • IDS Longitudinal Research Project (52 weeks with 4-6 weeks of dedicated research time)
  • IDS Longitudinal Staffing (52 weeks scheduled every third week or weekend)
  • Institutional Review Board Longitudinal Rotation (3-4 months)
  • Protocol Review and Monitoring Committee Longitudinal Rotation (12 months)

Optional Longitudinal Rotation

  • Teaching Certificate (available if not completed as PGY1)

Program Expectations

  • ACPE-accredited CE presentation
  • Major research project and manuscript
  • Present major research project at a regional or national meeting

Current Resident

Markala Butler, Pharm.D.

Dr. Markala Butler is a PGY2 Investigational Drugs & Research Pharmacy Resident at UT Southwestern Medical Center Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center. She grew up in Dallas, Texas, and earned her Doctor of Pharmacy from Texas Southern University College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences. She is passionate about improving healthcare outcomes through compassionate care, expanded access to treatment, and advancing the use of investigational drugs. Her professional interests include oncology-focused investigational drug services for both adult and pediatric populations. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, attending Astros baseball games, and spending time with her family and friends.
